Who we Are
The Wisborough Green Lodge No. 8049 was Consecrated on Tuesday 26th October 1965 by the R.W. Provincial Grand Master of Sussex Bro Arthur Jolly, assisted by Officers of Provincial Lodge of Sussex at the Masonic Temple in Denne Road in Horsham. The temple was filled to capacity and many brethren who would have liked to be there were unable to gain admission because of space.
A great deal of the preliminary work of bringing the Lodge into being was done by that untiring and energetic Bro: the Vicar of Wisborough Green, W. Bro the Rev J.E. Penney. There were sixteen founders, and it is interesting to note the reasons for the Lodge being created.
(1) To provide a Masonic home for many Masons who had retired to the district of Wisborough Green. As many of these have fixed incomes and are most hard hit by the constant devaluation of money, the aim was to run the Lodge as simply and economically as possible, particularly at the festive board.
(2) Many of the founders, through a life of travel abroad, have never been long in one place to reach the Chair of any Craft Lodge, so priority of progression will always be given to such brethren.
(3) The Lodge is to meet in the village Hall of Wisborough Green a lovely Queen Ann building converted from an old workhouse.
The Wisborough Green Lodge is a real ‘grass roots’ Lodge where the reasons for the
founding of our Lodge, although not as great today, the underlying principle of “no fuss”, and simplicity still prevail, and we believe is the envy of some other Lodges.
During the last few decades Masonry has experienced changes and revisions in many spheres, such as public perception, membership numbers, costs and accommodation, these aspects have, over those years, made Brethren more aware of the importance of their contribution to the Craft.
Becoming a Freemason is an excellent way of making new friends, many of which will last for life. And because Freemasonry brings together people from so many walks of life, many of these friendships will be with people you’d never otherwise have met, making them all the more special.
However, there are four key reasons to join us, founded on our four guiding principles of integrity, friendship, respect and charity. By “Charity” we don’t mean just money, we give our time and energies to helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
